When we help others, it allows us to feel a sense of purpose and to also raise our energy level. Raising your energy level, not only makes you feel better but it opens your heart, and makes you feel a sense of peace and belonging. Not only does it feel better to be kind, but often kind people live longer. Helping other make us internally healthy and encourage us to take better care of ourselves. When people help others deal with pain, then often their pain decreases as well.
Dr. James Doty, the director of Project Compassion and a clinical professor of neurosurgery at Stanford, mentioned, "Countless studies show that helping others boosts levels of happiness-producing brain chemicals, providing a powerful rush of emotional coziness known as “helper’s high.” And this generosity-induced mood boost is contagious." I personally help other all of the time with my work and because of my excitement when speak about my work, I then tend to encourage many other people to want to go out and help people such as I do. I have even been told that I glow when I talk about my work helping others. Working to help others always sets a deep felt fulfillment in me and it will for you too.
When people are going through a hard time or feeling depressed or sad, it is very easy to get caught up in themselves and focus on being selfish. Often, people that are going through hard times get caught up in needing help for themselves and the attention that sympathy brings them. When going through a hard time of suffering, or just feeling down it is always better to draw your attention outward rather than inward. People that volunteer are shown to have higher self-esteem and confidence. Feelings of being connected increases as well as a sense of belonging. You may be able to make new connections when helping out at an organization that you are passionate about when the other people that are volunteering there are passionate about what you love as well. Working one on one helping others can help decrease depression and feelings of isolation. You can gain a sense of inner peace and often times stress will be reduced. When you help other people you may also realize that other people may not have access to the resources that you do and that you should be thankful for the things you have been blessed with and have currently in your life. Within helping others, we are also able to help ourselves heal by receiving a new found sense of self worth. We are all here to help one another out, so the next time you are feeling low or are in pain, reach out and help someone else. Help yourself heal by helping another heal. And even if you are not trying to heal, it can still bring fulfillment and fill up your heart when you lend your hand to someone that needs it. If you have something to give or assist with to another person, do not think twice, instead take the step in making an impact on someone else and your heart will be happy that you did.
